Developing the new strategy for primary health care in the WHO European Region

As an integral part of WHO/Europe, the WHO European Centre for Primary Health Care works with Member States to realize the potential of primary health care to build resilient health systems and contribute to equitable post-pandemic recovery under the priorities and strategies of the European Programme of Work 2020–2025 (EPW).

The pandemic has not only shown the importance of primary health care, but has also revealed just how rapidly it can transform, adjust and accelerate change to serve people, including those who are vulnerable.

This transformation has inspired a new strategy on primary health care that the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region endorsed at the 71st session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in September 2021.

The new strategy serves as a guide to the products and services that WHO offers to Member States to strengthen their primary health-care systems, and to implement the visionary commitments set out in the EPW and the Regional Committee resolution.

Primary health care stands at the nexus of the core priorities of the EPW and is an important platform to advance each of its flagships.
