In Nigeria, about 70% of the population depends on primary health care (PHC) centres, which make up 85.3% of the country’s hospitals and clinics. However, only around 20% of these PHC facilities are functional. To address this, the federal government launched a renovation programme in 2017 for 10,000 PHC centres, which improved the supply of essential medicines and equipment, upgraded 110 facilities, and trained and deployed health workers.
Collaboration between the National Health Insurance Authority and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency has provided funding to at least 1,400 PHC centres (supporting 8,300 facilities), improving professional birth attendance and leading to the hiring of over 2,400 health professionals.
The report highlights the need to strengthen public–private partnerships to enhance PHC service delivery and achieve universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030.
